The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has rolled out significant reforms in its curriculum, introducing a three-language formula, a two-level system for mathematics and science, and the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Computational Thinking (CT) from the 2026-27 academic session.

Under the new reforms, students will study three languages, with the third language becoming compulsory from Class 6 in 2026-27 and extending to Class 10 by 2030-31. The two-level system in mathematics and science will see students studying a standard curriculum and appearing for a common 80-mark examination, while those opting for higher proficiency can choose an additional 'advanced' level in either or both subjects.

The reforms also introduce key curricular areas, including AI and CT, Vocational Education, Physical Education and Well-being, and Interdisciplinary Studies. CBSE Chairperson Rahul Singh stated that CT and AI will be compulsorily assessed in board examinations from 2029.

The changes aim to provide flexibility and promote conceptual depth, while also shifting the focus towards application and reasoning. The reforms are aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and operationalise ideas first mooted as part of the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCF-SE) 2023.
