The Registrar General of India has issued a directive outlining the duties of census enumerators, including maintaining polite behavior and ensuring all houses are covered in data collection.

Census officers found not performing their duties or asking offensive questions may face up to three years in jail and a fine of ₹1,000.

The directive also specifies duties for principal census officers, supervisors, and district charge officers, including organizing the process and monitoring developments.

The 16th Census, which includes caste enumeration, will be conducted in two phases and is expected to be completed by March 1, 2027.
