The Indian government has officially announced the first phase of Census 2027, setting the stage for a massive demographic exercise that will digitally map the country. Beginning April 1, houselisting operations will span six months, with each state and Union territory allocated a specific 30-day window. This initial phase will focus on collecting data about household conditions, assets, and amenities, providing enumerators with an opportunity to update house records. A self-enumeration facility will be available 15 days prior to the houselisting operations in each area, allowing citizens to contribute to the process. The second phase, scheduled for February 1, 2027, will involve collecting demographic, socio-economic, and cultural data from every person in each household. To facilitate the census, the government has allocated ₹11,718 crore, with approximately 18,600 technical personnel engaged for 550 days at the local level. This digital census is expected to be completed by March 1, 2027, providing the country with the most up-to-date data in the shortest possible time. The exercise will mark a significant milestone in India's demographic history, offering insights into the country's social, economic, and cultural fabric.
