Chennai Man Arrested for Knife Attack on Girlfriend at Kolkata Guesthouse

A chilling incident of intimate partner violence has come to light in Kolkata, where a 40-year-old man from Chennai allegedly attacked his girlfriend with a knife at a guesthouse on Sunday. Pradeep Kumar Selvaraj, a resident of Tamil Nadu's Chennai, has been arrested and is currently under investigation. The victim, a 38-year-old woman from North 24 Parganas, was taken to NRS Hospital for treatment after the attack, which left her bleeding profusely from her shoulder. The motive behind the attack is yet to be ascertained. This incident highlights the alarming prevalence of intimate partner violence in India, with a recent WHO report revealing that over a fifth of women aged 15-49 experienced such violence in 2023. The report also noted that nearly 30% of women in India have been affected by intimate partner violence at some point in their lifetime. In a separate incident in Bengaluru, a 21-year-old woman was assaulted by a man she had befriended on Instagram, highlighting the need for awareness and action against such crimes. The police are still investigating the motive behind the attack and the circumstances leading to it.
