Christmas School Holidays 2025: A Patchwork Calendar Across India

As Christmas 2025 approaches, families across India are preparing for the winter break. However, the holiday schedule remains uneven, varying by state, school type, and government directives. December 25 is a designated holiday in most areas, but the duration of winter breaks differs significantly. A nationwide survey of school calendars reveals a mix of long closures and no holiday at all. Government schools often stick to a one-day holiday on Christmas, while minority and missionary schools tend to announce longer breaks tied to religious observance. Private schools retain flexibility in their scheduling, sometimes extending the break and other times not. In Uttar Pradesh, a unique directive has been issued, declaring December 25 as the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Schools will remain open on this day, with mandatory student attendance and commemorative programs. This decision has removed any ambiguity for parents expecting a Christmas holiday. In contrast, several states are offering extended winter breaks. Delhi schools will be closed on December 25, while December 24 is a restricted holiday. Punjab has announced a long winter vacation from December 22 to January 10, 2026. Rajasthan and Kerala have also confirmed extended breaks, with schools shutting from December 25 and reopening on January 5 and January 5, 2026, respectively. In southern and western states, there are mixed signals. Telangana missionary schools have confirmed holidays from December 23 to December 27, while government schools will observe only December 25 as a holiday. Andhra Pradesh is expected to follow a similar pattern, although official circulars are still awaited. To navigate the patchwork calendar, parents and students are advised to rely on official school notices rather than assumptions. While some enjoy a long winter break, others will continue with business as usual, even on Christmas Day.
