Cold Wave Grips Northern India: Delhi, Punjab, Himachal, and More Under Intense Cold till Jan 10

A prolonged cold wave is expected to continue in northern India, with several states including Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, and Odisha likely to experience intense cold conditions until January 10, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). In Delhi, the city witnessed its second cold day this month, with the maximum temperature recorded at 16.7 degrees Celsius, 2.3 degrees below the seasonal average. The IMD has forecast a clear sky with moderate fog in the morning hours, with a maximum temperature ranging from 15-17 degrees Celsius and a minimum temperature between 7-9 degrees Celsius. Similar conditions are expected in Punjab, where a yellow alert has been issued for most areas and an orange alert for Amritsar, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Patiala, and Kapurthala. The Punjab government has extended winter holidays in all schools till January 13. Other states like Haryana, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh have also issued alerts and extended winter breaks due to the cold weather conditions. In Himachal Pradesh, fresh snowfall was recorded in Kullu, while in Jammu and Kashmir's Poonch, heavy snowfall disrupted traffic operations. The IMD has also forecast dense to very dense fog in Punjab and Haryana-Chandigarh from January 8 to 10, with isolated pockets of dense fog expected till January 14. Residents are advised to stay warm and take necessary precautions to avoid any health issues due to the prolonged cold wave.
