The Mumbai Congress on Saturday accused the BJP of attempting to polarise voters ahead of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation elections, citing the targeting of MLA Aslam Shaikh as a key strategy. Congress workers staged a protest outside the office of BJP chief Ameet Satam, which was met with police detention. According to Congress president Varsha Gaikwad, BJP leader Mangal Prabhat Lodha is behind the alleged targeting of Shaikh. Lodha, a Maharashtra minister and developer, had accused Shaikh of obstructing anti-encroachment drives and protecting illegal occupants in Malvani. Gaikwad countered Lodha's claims, saying that Shaikh was a champion of communal harmony in Malvani, where people from different faiths coexist peacefully. The Congress leader accused the BJP of diverting attention from civic issues by raising communal tensions and ignoring real problems facing Mumbai. Gaikwad also pointed out that the BJP controls the BMC administration and the state government, yet basic issues in Mumbai remain unresolved. She expressed confidence that voters would reject the BJP's attempts at polarisation and focus on real issues affecting the city.
