GUWAHATI: Prateek Bordoloi, the Congress candidate for Margherita, stepped down from the election race citing "changed circumstances" on Thursday. His father, Pradyut Bordoloi, had joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) a day earlier.

A political debutant, Prateek was named by the Congress as its candidate for Margherita, a seat his father had represented in the assembly for four terms.

Prateek said in a letter to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge that it would be inappropriate for him to continue as a candidate in the present situation.

He expressed his commitment to the Congress and the people of Margherita, stating that he would continue to work for them in whatever capacity the leadership deems appropriate.

Congress state president Gaurav Gogoi expressed sympathy and moral support for Prateek Bordoloi, saying that he will speak on behalf of the party.
