A by-election in Davangere South has turned contentious after the Congress party chose Samarth Shamanur, the grandson of late Shamanur Shivashankarappa, as its candidate.

The decision has sparked opposition from minority community leaders and led to an open rebellion within the party's ranks.

Sadiq Pailwan, a long-time associate of the late leader, has entered the fray as an independent candidate, backed by supporters including local minority leaders.

Pailwan cited broken assurances and neglect of minority aspirations as reasons for his candidacy, stating he would not withdraw from the fray for any reason.

The fallout has extended beyond a single candidacy, with more than 20 minority and youth leaders joining the Bharatiya Janata Party in recent days.

The BJP has sought to amplify the issue, portraying the Congress move as an example of dynastic politics overriding community representation.
