The Congress has hit back at the Election Commission of India (ECI) over a show-cause notice to party chief Mallikarjun Kharge, accusing the poll panel of acting in a 'casual and routine manner'.
The notice was issued over Kharge's remark calling Prime Minister Narendra Modi a 'terrorist' during a press conference in Chennai, but the Congress claimed he meant the PM was 'terrorising' the democratic fabric of the country.
Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh wrote to the chief election commissioner, seeking more time to respond to the notice, citing the short 24-hour deadline and the party's multiple campaigns.
The Congress also cited two alleged BJP violations that ECI had ignored, including a national address by Modi and a post by Union home minister Amit Shah promising benefits to women and unemployed youth.
The BJP had demanded strict action and a public apology from Kharge, describing his remark as 'an issue for the entire nation'.
