The Indian National Congress has condemned the Narendra Modi government's 'silence' on Iran after the US and Israeli strikes, citing former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi's foreign policy doctrine.

The Congress party questioned India's silence on the 'assassination' of senior leaders of the Iranian regime and highlighted the country's long-standing ties with Iran, dating back nearly 3,000 years.

Party chief Mallikarjun Kharge had earlier condemned the killing of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in joint US-Israeli strikes, saying that India's silence was 'selective' and that the country must speak up against targeted killings everywhere.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on the other hand, has called for dialogue to resolve conflicts and expressed grave concern over the situation in West Asia, while emphasizing the safety of civilians.

The Ministry of External Affairs has urged all sides to 'exercise restraint, avoid escalation, and prioritise the safety of civilians', while saying that 'sovereignty and integrity of all states must be respected.'
