A cow vigilante, Chandrashekhar, also known as Farsa Baba, died in a road crash on the Agra-Delhi highway near Mathura, sparking massive protests and a traffic jam.
His supporters alleged that Baba was run over by cow smugglers, but the Mathura district administration said he was killed in an accident involving a Rajasthan-registered truck.
The truck driver sustained injuries, and the vehicle was damaged in the incident, which occurred in dense fog.
Rumours of a deliberate killing spread, triggering a road blockade and stone-pelting, but officials assured a proper investigation would be conducted.
Police and administrative vehicles were vandalised, and six policemen and six protestors were injured in the chaos.
The police have now cleared the highway for smooth traffic movement.
