Members of the historic Delhi Gymkhana Club launched a signature campaign to authorise legal action against the Centre's order to vacate its premises in Lutyens' Delhi by June 5.

The club, which has been an important part of the lives of its members for decades, received a notice from the Land and Development Office (L&DO) on May 22, seeking 're-entry and resumption' of the 27.3-acre land parcel.

The Centre cited 'securing defence infrastructure' as the reason for the eviction order, but the club's members are concerned about its future and where it will be shifted.

Several former presidents of India, senior military officers, politicians and bureaucrats have been members of Delhi Gymkhana over the years, and the club is one of the most prestigious in Delhi.

The members have unanimously decided to challenge the eviction order legally, with several signing an authorisation letter to file a petition in court.
