The Delhi High Court has stayed a sessions court's order that put on hold the release of Indian Youth Congress (IYC) president Uday Bhanu Chib, who was arrested in connection with a protest at the India AI Impact Summit.
Chib was granted bail by a duty magistrate on February 28, but the sessions court later stayed the order without providing any reasons.
Justice Saurabh Banerjee held a special sitting to hear Chib's petition and paused the sessions court order, saying there was no application of mind in the decision.
The sessions court had observed that the magistrate's order constituted a rare and exceptional situation that warranted the grant of an ex parte stay.
However, the Delhi High Court has stayed the order, saying there was no clear reflection of the applicability of the relevant judgment.
Chib was arrested on February 24 in connection with his role in the protest at Bharat Mandapam, where IYC members removed their shirts to display slogans targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the central government.
