A Delhi court has released four accused in the 2020 Northeast Delhi riots conspiracy case after they met the bail conditions set by the Supreme Court. The Additional Sessions Judge Sameer Bajpai accepted the ₹2 lakh bail bonds and two local sureties for Gulfisha Fatima, Meeran Haider, Shifa Ur Rehman, and Mohd Saleem Khan. However, Shadab Ahmad, who was also granted bail, failed to appear before the court to furnish his bail bonds. The release order came after the Delhi Police submitted verification reports of the bond sureties and documents filed by the accused. The court noted that the accused had fulfilled all bail conditions imposed by the Supreme Court, which had granted bail to the five accused in the case, citing a hierarchy of participation. The top court had refused bail to activists Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam, citing a prima facie case against them under the Unlawful Activities Act. The bail conditions imposed by the Supreme Court include a personal bond of ₹2 lakh, remaining within the National Capital Territory of Delhi, surrendering passports, and furnishing current residential addresses and contact information. The accused are also barred from contacting or influencing witnesses or associating with groups linked to the case. The release of the four accused brings an end to a delay caused by the need for the Delhi Police to verify their documents and sureties.
