The Madras High Court has directed the Election Commission of India (ECI) to explain its silence on a disputed postal ballot in the Tiruppattur assembly constituency in Tamil Nadu's recent elections.

DMK leader KR Periyakaruppan lost the seat by a single vote and challenged the results, alleging that a postal ballot was wrongly sent to another constituency and rejected.

The court questioned ECI's inaction, saying it was their duty to respond to the complaint.

Senior advocates argued that the disputed ballot could alter the election outcome, while ECI said only an election petition could resolve the dispute.

The court posted the matter for further hearing on Monday.
