Initiative to stabilize onion prices and ensure adequate supply during the festive season, the first ‘Kanda Express’ carrying approximately 440 metric tonnes of onions is being dispatched to Agartala, Tripura. The special train is expected to reach the state by October 18, 2026.
The initiative has been undertaken by the Department of Consumer Affairs, Government of India, to strengthen the supply chain and improve the availability of onions at affordable prices. The onions are being transported from the buffer stock maintained under the Price Stabilization Fund (PSF).
The initiative aims to expand the distribution of onions across seven districts of Tripura: Dhalai, South Tripura, Khowai, Unakoti, West Tripura, Gomati and Sepahijala. The move is expected to help meet rising market demand, improve the availability of this essential commodity and reduce the impact of price fluctuations on consumers.
State Minister Sushanta Choudhury welcomed the initiative and expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha, Union Food Minister Pralhad Joshi and Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw for their support.
The arrival of the first Kanda Express is expected to strengthen Tripura’s onion distribution network and provide relief to consumers during the festive season.
