Delhi was shrouded in dense fog on Thursday, with icy-cold northwesterly winds pushing the minimum temperature to a season-low of 5.8°C, a full 2.8°C below normal. The mercury had dropped to 4.8°C at Palam, a record low in the area. The maximum temperature was expected to hover around 15-17°C, but the upper-level fog and biting winds kept it two degrees below normal at 16.7°C. The air quality also remained a concern, with a 24-hour average AQI of 276 (poor) recorded at 9am. Skymet Weather's Mahesh Palawat attributed the unseasonal chill to consistent northwesterly winds and fog, which prevented a rise in the maximum temperature. The AQI was expected to deteriorate further to the 'very poor' category in the second half of the day.
