The Government of Goa has appointed 32-year-old Varad Samant, a successful farmer from Dharbandora, as its agriculture brand ambassador. Samant's journey from a reluctant cultivator to a high-volume vegetable producer has been recognized by Chief Minister Pramod Sawant as a model for young farmers. The chief minister praised Samant's innovative farming practices, mechanization, and government support as key factors behind his success. Samant's journey into farming was not planned, but he discovered his passion for vegetable cultivation after exploring best practices in Karnataka and Maharashtra. He began modestly, growing 'bhindi' on 2,000 square meters and later expanded to cultivate cucumbers, carrots, cabbage, and other vegetables. Today, he grows vegetables on around 10 acres of land, combining traditional knowledge with mechanized and efficient farming methods. As the brand ambassador, Samant aims to inspire young Goans to take up farming, dispelling the perception that it is not possible in the state. He believes that with dedication and government support, farmers can grow crops successfully and earn a good income. Samant also emphasizes the importance of protecting agricultural fields, warning that loss of farmland would undermine food security. The Goa government's decision to appoint Samant as its brand ambassador is part of its broader vision to make Goa 'Swayampurna' in vegetable cultivation. The government is implementing the Promotion of Vegetables with Assured Market scheme, which aims to make Goa self-sufficient in vegetable production. Samant's appointment is seen as a key step in promoting this vision and encouraging young farmers to take up the challenge.
