A 21-year-old civil engineering student at the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IIT-B) tragically lost his life in a suicide on Wednesday morning. CCTV footage revealed the student waiting on the ninth-storey terrace of a hostel building for nearly 10 minutes before jumping off at 1:17 am. Despite being rushed to Rajawadi Hospital, he was declared brought dead. The student, hailing from Rajasthan, was a high achiever academically but had been struggling with depression and had sought help from the Student Wellness Center on campus earlier. His family, who is well-off and well-educated, described the incident as 'very unfortunate.' The student's academic record showed no signs of struggling, with a 6.7 out of 10 in the second semester and 7 out of 10 in the third semester. However, a handwritten note found in his hostel room revealed his desperate cry for help: 'The world is not for me and I am under depression.' Police have registered an accidental death report and are conducting an investigation. Authorities at IIT-B have expressed dismay over the incident and are taking steps to provide support to students, including counseling sessions with psychiatrists and regular check-ins with faculty members. The institute has a history of organizing events and sessions on mental health, but the tragic loss of this young student serves as a reminder of the ongoing need for support and resources to address mental health issues on campus.
