The nationwide strike called by All India Organisation of Chemists and Druggists against unregulated online pharmacies started with a mixed response.

The strike, which was called to protest against 'illegal' operations of online pharmacies, saw all medical shops closed, according to AIOCD General Secretary Rajiv Singhal.

However, outlets of some organised pharmacy chains in the National Capital Region were operating, with one sales executive stating that they were 'not a part of the strike'.

The AIOCD is protesting against GSR 817 and GSR 220 notifications, which it claims are effectively regularising online pharmacies, leading to the sale of medicines without proper physical verification of prescriptions.

The organisation is also concerned about deep discounting by online pharmacies, which it says is hurting traditional chemists.

Singhal stated that the AIOCD will consider its future course of action after the one-day nationwide strike to protect the interests of its members and stakeholders.
