The Indian government has expanded free rail travel benefits to a new category of gallantry award winners, including those awarded the Sena Medal, Nau Sena Medal, and Vayu Sena Medal.
These military personnel will now be entitled to lifelong free travel in First Class, 2nd AC, and chair car on trains, along with their dependents and a companion.
The rail concession applies only to those awarded these medals for gallantry, excluding personnel recognized for distinguished service.
This move extends the existing benefits previously only available to winners of the Ashok Chakra, Kirti Chakra, and Shaurya Chakra, and their wartime equivalents.
An official letter issued on March 16 outlines the details of the grant, stating that the Ministry of Defence has issued a Government Sanction Letter (GSL) for complimentary lifelong travel in trains of Indian Railways.
The Adjutant General's branch is working out the modalities for availing this facility, which will be notified soon.
