India welcomed a two-week ceasefire between Iran and the US, calling for unhindered global commerce through the Strait of Hormuz. The country hopes the development will boost peace efforts in Ukraine.
The ceasefire, brokered by Pakistan with China's backing, was announced after 40 days of airstrikes and attacks on energy infrastructure. India's external affairs ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said de-escalation, dialogue, and diplomacy are essential to end the conflict.
India expects unimpeded freedom of navigation and the global flow of commerce to prevail through the Strait of Hormuz, which has been impacted by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Only eight Indian-flagged LPG carriers have transited the strait since the start of the conflict.
India continues to be in touch with Iran and other stakeholders to ensure the unimpeded transit of Indian-flagged shipping through the strait. The country has around 7,500 nationals remaining in Iran, with 1,864 having exited through Armenia and Azerbaijan.
