The Indian government is working to introduce a bill that will delink the reservation of seats for women in legislatures from the census and delimitation process.
The proposed amendment aims to increase the number of seats in the Lok Sabha to 816, with 273 reserved for women.
The proportional representation of each state will remain the same, with Uttar Pradesh having 120 seats and Tamil Nadu having 59.
The government plans to set up a delimitation commission by June to redraw constituencies before the implementation of the reservation in 2029.
However, the plan has raised concerns about the imbalance in representation, with southern states potentially having more weightage than northern states.
The government has begun reaching out to opposition parties to build consensus on the amendment, which is expected to be introduced before the session winds up on April 2.
