The Indian government has proposed increasing the number of Lok Sabha seats to 850 as part of efforts to implement women's reservation in the House from the 2029 polls.
The proposed amendment aims to increase the number of Lok Sabha seats from 543 to 850 by revising Article 81, with 815 seats allocated to states and 35 to Union Territories.
The government plans to move a constitution amendment bill for the implementation of 33% reservation for women in the Lok Sabha from 2029 in a special sitting of Parliament on April 16-18.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called on all political parties to support the amendment, stating that it is a historic opportunity to ensure 33% reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies.
However, opposition parties have expressed concerns about the proposed delimitation bill, alleging that it will limit the representation of southern states in the Lok Sabha.
