India's telecom regulator has released a consultation paper on implementing an automated wireless vehicle communications system that can alert drivers of potential crashes and traffic violations.
The proposed system, known as vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication, will enable vehicles to exchange data with each other, traffic signals, and cellular networks in real-time.
The technology aims to curb traffic deaths, which accounted for an estimated 173,000 fatalities and 463,000 injuries in 2023.
The system will have four communication modes: vehicle-to-vehicle, vehicle-to-infrastructure, vehicle-to-pedestrian, and vehicle-to-network.
While the rollout is expected to begin with expressways and access-controlled corridors, experts note that older vehicles will pose a challenge for universal adoption.
The consultation paper seeks public and industry feedback on several open questions, including spectrum management, security architecture, and personal data protection.
