Nearly 43% of the 3,609 trees transplanted for the ₹20,000-crore Central Vista redevelopment project have perished, the Centre informed the Lok Sabha on Thursday.

Compensatory plantation was undertaken alongside transplantation efforts, with 24,450 trees planted in NTPC ECO Park, Badarpur and 1,730 trees in Ghitorni.

The Centre added that ₹5.29 crore has been spent on these activities over the last three financial years.

The highest number of tree transplantations took place at the Common Central Secretariat (CCS) buildings 1, 2 and 3, followed by CCS 6 and 7 sites, the new Parliament Building site, and the Vice President’s Enclave.
