The finance ministry has approved a major overhaul of the Enforcement Directorate, significantly expanding its investigation and enforcement capabilities.

The restructuring increases the number of posts across the ED's executive cadre, particularly at operational levels handling investigations under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) and the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA).

Key changes include a 80% increase in deputy director posts from 148 to 267, a 108% increase in assistant director posts from 255 to 531, and a 70% increase in enforcement officers from 355 to 606.

The restructuring also provides for expansion at senior levels, with additional director posts increasing from 10 to 24 and joint director posts from 28 to 49.

Officials said the move aims to strengthen the ED's operational capacity as financial crime investigations have risen substantially over the past few years.

The enhanced manpower is expected to improve case monitoring, prosecution, and adjudication mechanisms.
