Kamal Haasan's Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) has announced it will not contest the upcoming Tamil Nadu assembly election 2026, citing unacceptable seat-sharing terms with the ruling DMK.

The elections are scheduled for April 23, with counting set for May 4.

Haasan said his party would still support the DMK-led alliance, calling it a 'duty' and 'not sacrifice.'

He cited the DMK's offer of seats and the suggestion to contest under their symbol as non-negotiable, despite the chief minister MK Stalin's praise for the decision.

Haasan emphasized that in politics, 'election is only a part' and that there is 'no full stop' in politics.

The MNM had joined the DMK-led alliance during the last parliamentary election and had maintained the alliance despite some differences.
