The Karnataka assembly has passed two key bills aimed at addressing social issues and preserving heritage. The Karnataka Freedom of Choice in Marriage and Prevention and Prohibition of Crimes in the Name of Honour and Tradition Bill, 2026, aims to curb honour killings and reinforce constitutional values in society.

Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister HK Patil stated that the legislation is intended to bring social change and enable a social revolution by providing legal backing to values of equality and inclusivity.

The Minister noted that the Bill would provide legal strength to protect couples and promote social harmony, while Leader of Opposition R Ashoka expressed concerns about the need for a new law, citing recurring incidents of honour killings.

The government has ensured that the law complements existing provisions and does not conflict with the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita.

The Karnataka Jnana Bhandar Manuscripts and Digitisation Bill, 2026, aims to preserve ancient manuscripts scattered across the state by safeguarding them through a dedicated authority and clear targets.

Minister Patil emphasized the urgent need to preserve these manuscripts, which cover diverse subjects including religion, medicine, science, and history.
