In a bid to mitigate the escalating human-wildlife conflict, Karnataka's Forest Minister Eshwar Khandre has announced a multi-pronged approach to tackle the issue. The state government has launched a comprehensive plan, utilizing technology and rapid response mechanisms to ensure the safety of both people and wildlife in vulnerable regions. According to Minister Khandre, the forest department has implemented measures to prevent conflict between humans and wild animals, particularly elephants and wolves. To address recurring elephant movements in coastal and interior Karnataka, the state has operationalized an elephant task force and strengthened field-level response systems. A dedicated helpline and command centre in Bengaluru monitor distress calls and coordinate responses. Once notified, teams are dispatched to assess the situation and take necessary action, which may include guiding the elephant back to forest corridors or deploying trained personnel. In a unique initiative, officials assess the behaviour and movement patterns of elephants before deciding on mitigation measures. The command centre also reviews response timelines and accountability, ensuring transparency and corrective action. Minister Khandre has further announced plans to provide residential facilities for frontline forest staff in conflict-prone areas, enhancing their preparedness and response capabilities. This proactive approach aims to reduce human-wildlife conflict and promote coexistence between humans and wildlife in Karnataka.
