The Kerala high court has ruled that a petition challenging the election of BJP MP Suresh Gopi from Thrissur is maintainable, paving the way for a trial.
Gopi, the sole BJP MP from Kerala, won the Thrissur Lok Sabha constituency in the 2024 general elections by a margin of 74,686 votes.
The petitioner, Binoy AS, an All India Youth Federation leader, had claimed that Gopi and his associates indulged in corrupt practices during the campaign, including misusing religious symbols and promising gifts to voters.
The high court noted that one of the allegations, regarding the distribution of shade umbrellas, was struck off, but Gopi shall face trial for the other corrupt practices alleged in the petition.
Gopi has stated that he will approach the higher courts against the high court's ruling.
