Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee defended the West Bengal government over the chaos that erupted during Lionel Messi's GOAT India tour in Kolkata. Banerjee claimed that the state administration acted swiftly after the incident, launching a probe and receiving an apology from Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee within an hour. In a veiled attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party, Banerjee pointed out that several people died in stampedes during the Mahakumbh Mela and the New Delhi railway station during the BJP's rule. He accused the BJP of mishandling these incidents. The remarks came after West Bengal's sports minister Aroop Biswas resigned over the fiasco, citing the need for an impartial probe. Biswas handed in a handwritten letter to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who accepted his request. The Sports Department will be temporarily headed by another minister until the inquiry is complete. On December 13, massive crowds surged into the Salt Lake stadium in Kolkata, where Messi was scheduled to perform. However, fans felt shortchanged after paying high prices for tickets, leading to chaos and vandalism, including broken chairs and thrown water bottles.
