West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will largely be away from her Bhabanipur constituency in south Kolkata as she leads the Trinamool Congress (TMC) campaign across the state. Banerjee has entrusted her trusted lieutenants to campaign in her constituency, which goes to the polls on April 29.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has fielded Suvendu Adhikari, the leader of the Opposition in the outgoing assembly, against Banerjee in Bhabanipur. Banerjee is scheduled to launch the TMC's campaign from North Bengal on Tuesday and will tour several districts over the next seven days.
TMC veteran leaders, including Cabinet minister Firhad Hakim and State minister Aroop Biswas, will lead the campaign in Bhabanipur in Banerjee's absence. The TMC is confident of winning the seat with a margin of more than 60,000 votes.
Meanwhile, the BJP's Suvendu Adhikari has launched his campaign in Bhabanipur, claiming he will win the seat with a margin of 25,000 votes. However, many voters in the constituency remain loyal to Banerjee, who has been winning the seat since 2011.
