IMPHAL: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislator Yumnam Khemchand Singh has stressed that dialogue is the only way to resolve the ongoing ethnic crisis in Manipur. Speaking at a Christmas gathering, he expressed hope that this festive season will bring peace to the state. Over 260 people lost their lives in the violent clashes between Meitei and Kuki communities that broke out in May 2023. The violence has left thousands homeless, with more than 60,000 people displaced and living in relief camps across the state. To prevent further conflict, security agencies have established buffer zones between Meitei and Kuki-dominated areas. Khemchand Singh, who recently visited Kuki villages in Ukhrul and Kamjong districts, has been working to bridge the gap between the two communities. The Manipur MLA emphasized that the state's 36 communities must work together to safeguard their interests. He highlighted the unity displayed by the Nagas, Kukis, and Meiteis during World War II, when they fought together against British troops as part of the Indian National Army (INA) campaign. Khemchand Singh has become the first Meitei MLA to visit Kuki villages since the violence began. He has been promoting peace and dialogue as the only way to resolve the crisis, which has been ongoing for two years. With Christmas approaching, the MLA is praying for a peaceful resolution to the conflict and an end to the barriers that have divided the communities.
