Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian on Saturday, discussing the evolving situation in West Asia and the need to keep shipping lanes open and secure.

During the conversation, Modi conveyed Eid and Nowruz greetings and expressed hope that the festive season brings peace, stability, and prosperity to the region.

He also flagged concerns over recent attacks targeting key infrastructure in the region, condemning attacks on critical infrastructure that threaten regional stability and disrupt global supply chains.

The Prime Minister stressed the importance of safeguarding freedom of navigation and ensuring that shipping lanes remain open and secure, marking the second telephonic conversation between the two leaders since the onset of the conflict in West Asia on February 28.

India's concerns on keeping shipping lanes secure come as more than 20 Indian vessels remain stranded in the Persian Gulf region, with traffic through the Strait of Hormuz largely disrupted.

External affairs minister S Jaishankar has said discussions with Tehran on ensuring safe passage remain ongoing and are yielding results, citing the recent movement of two gas tankers as an example of diplomatic efforts facilitating transit through the crucial waterway.
