Punjab Police have registered the first case under the new sacrilege act after torn pages of a Sukhmani Sahib gutka were found scattered on a street in Malout town.

An FIR was registered against unidentified persons under the Jaagat Jyot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar (Amendment) Act, which prescribes stringent punishment for sacrilege.

Police are questioning local residents and scanning CCTV footage to identify the culprits, while the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee has sought identification of those responsible.

The new law was enacted by the Punjab assembly and prescribes life imprisonment and a fine of up to ₹25 lakh for sacrilege.

The case marks the first instance of the new law being enforced, with the police taking prompt action in registering a criminal case.
