The Supreme Court has directed the Centre to file an affidavit within two weeks on a plea by Balwant Singh Rajoana, convicted in the 1995 assassination case of Beant Singh, seeking commutation of his death sentence.
Rajoana has been incarcerated for over 29 years, with over 15 years on death row.
The Centre's counsel was asked to file a counter affidavit after they sought to place documents in a sealed cover.
The bench granted two weeks to the Centre's counsel, making it clear that no further time would be granted.
The case dates back to August 31, 1995, when former Punjab Chief Minister Singh and 16 others were killed in a blast at the civil secretariat in Chandigarh.
