In a bid to safeguard public safety and prevent potential incidents, the administration of Arunachal Pradesh's West Kameng district has introduced stringent regulations for transporting hazardous goods through the critical Sela Tunnel. According to an order by Deputy Commissioner Akriti Sagar, vehicles carrying flammable materials like petrol and LPG will be allowed to pass through the tunnel during specific time slots - between 1 pm and 3 pm, and 11 pm and 4 am. Army vehicles transporting hazardous materials may be granted passage in convoys, provided they notify the tunnel safety officer beforehand. The district administration has also outlined comprehensive measures for winter and monsoon traffic management. The Border Roads Organisation has been tasked with ensuring the tunnel's safety through regular maintenance and adequate manpower deployment. Traffic police will oversee vehicular movement, while civil police at Padma and Dirang towns will enforce snow chain usage during snowy conditions. Vehicles carrying hazardous goods are now required to be equipped with automatic extinguishing devices and have firefighting equipment installed inside the tunnel. To ensure smooth passage, all vehicles must notify the tunnel safety officer at least 24 hours in advance. Speed limits inside the tunnel have been capped at 40 km/h, and overtaking and halting are strictly prohibited. These regulations aim to prevent accidents and ensure the safe passage of hazardous materials through the Sela Tunnel.
