Congress MP Shashi Tharoor expressed disappointment with the Modi government for not taking the lead in the US-Iran peace efforts, saying Pakistan is now leading the mediation. Tharoor had backed the government's silence, hoping it would create a space for peacemaking, but now feels it's 'embarrassing' for India.

Tharoor wished 'good luck' to Pakistan, Egypt, and Turkey with the mediation efforts but noted that India gets no credit while Pakistan is holding the peace talks. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar countered the Opposition's 'silence' charge, stating India is not a 'broker nation' and that Pakistan's role is nothing new.
