A devastating swing tragedy struck Surajkund International Crafts Mela on Saturday evening, claiming the life of Inspector Jagdish Prasad (58) and injuring 12 others. The giant 'Tsunami' swing snapped mid-air and collapsed at around 6:15 pm, leaving behind a trail of destruction. The swing operator, Mohammad Shakir, and his staff member, Nitesh, were arrested on Sunday in connection with the incident. They have been booked under Section 105 of the BNS at the Surajkund police station. Inspector Prasad, who was on duty at the time, lost his life while trying to rescue those trapped under the debris. The police commissioner, Satender Kumar Gupta, confirmed that Prasad's body was handed over to his family after an autopsy. The injured are undergoing treatment at two hospitals and are reported to be in stable condition. This is the second mishap at the Surajkund fair, following a designer gate collapse at Entrance No. 2. In a stern warning, Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini directed officials to ensure that such accidents do not recur. He ordered a probe to determine the reason behind the collapse and instructed officials to strictly adhere to safety standards in the fair and other public events. The state government has announced financial assistance of ₹1 lakh each to the seriously injured and has extended condolences to Inspector Prasad's family. The Haryana DGP, Ajay Singhal, had earlier announced a compensation of ₹1 crore for the brave inspector and assured a government job to a member of his family. The district administration has decided to continue the fair on Sunday, with the swing area cordoned off pending further investigation.
