A 15-year-old rape survivor who was granted permission to terminate her 7-month pregnancy has given birth to a baby boy at AIIMS in New Delhi. The newborn is currently under observation in the NICU, but officials report the baby's condition is stable. The mother and her parents have relinquished the child's rights, and the formal adoption procedure has begun with the Central adoption agency.
The Supreme Court had allowed the Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) despite the pregnancy exceeding the statutory limit, citing the reproductive autonomy of the woman. The court had also dismissed a review petition filed by AIIMS, stating that priority should be given to the choice of the girl's family.
