A fresh wave of debate has emerged over the renaming of districts in Telangana, following a statement by Bharatiya Janata Party's Dharmapuri Arvind, the MP representing Nizamabad district. Arvind claimed that if the BJP comes to power in the state, they would change the name of the district to its original name, Indur, citing the Nizam era's 'tyranny' as the reason for the change. According to Arvind, the name 'Nizamabad' was given by the Nizam, the ruler of the erstwhile Hyderabad State, and changing it to 'Indur' would help the city's development. The BJP's Telangana chief, Ramchander Rao, backed Arvind's statement, stating that the party stands with its MP. Rao also hinted that the proposal to change the names of Telangana's districts is not limited to Nizamabad, but also applies to other areas, which he believes are reminders of the Nizam era's tyranny. However, senior Congress leader and former MP, Hanumanth Rao, has expressed concerns over the issue, calling it 'unnecessary' and warning that such remarks could spark law-and-order problems. Rao pointed out that Nizamabad has had different names in the past, but no government has changed its name since Independence, which he believes is a reflection of the city's secular nature. With the Telangana government taking note of the issue, the debate over the renaming of Nizamabad and other districts in the state has gained momentum, raising questions over the legacy of Hyderabad's rich history and the implications of changing its names.
