A 23-year-old Dalit intern doctor at the Government Medical College in Telangana's Siddipet district took her own life, allegedly driven by a broken promise of marriage from a senior resident doctor. The victim, who hailed from a financially disadvantaged family, was reportedly assured of marriage by the doctor last July, but he later withdrew his commitment, citing caste differences as the reason. The incident occurred on January 3, when the young woman injected herself with a herbicide while staying in the medical college hostel. Despite receiving medical treatment, she succumbed to her injuries on January 4. Following a complaint from her sister, authorities registered a case under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The accused has been taken into custody as the investigation continues. The victim was a bright and accomplished individual, known for her academic performance and involvement in sports. Her death has sent shockwaves, highlighting the issue of caste-based discrimination in India.
