A heated debate has erupted in Tamil Nadu after a minister's comments on the Madras High Court's recent verdict on the Thiruparankundram temple. Minister S. Regupathy questioned the court's decision, saying it alters traditional customs. However, Union Minister Piyush Goyal defended the verdict, accusing the DMK government of promoting an 'anti-Hindu' sentiment. Regupathy criticized the high court's ruling, stating that it goes against established customs and practices. He claimed that a dead body can only be cremated in a crematorium and not elsewhere. The Tamil Nadu government has decided to appeal against the decision, which allows Hindu devotees to light the Karthigai Deepam lamp at the temple. Goyal, on the other hand, hailed the high court's decision, saying it upholds the rights of Hindu devotees to offer prayers at the ancient temple. He accused the DMK government of following a policy of appeasement and going against the court's order. The BJP has welcomed the verdict, with party spokesperson Narayanan Tirupathy calling for the removal of Regupathy from the cabinet. The DMK has hit back at the BJP, with advocate and spokesperson A. Saravanan accusing the party of using the issue for political gain. Former Governor of Telangana and Puducherry, Tamilisai Soundarajan, has also welcomed the verdict, saying it respects the basic rights of Hindus and thanks the court for acknowledging their sentiments.
