Umar Khalid has approached the Delhi high court for interim bail in the 2020 Delhi riots conspiracy case after a lower court rejected his application.

Khalid sought 15 days of interim bail to attend his deceased uncle's 40th day ceremony and visit his mother, who is scheduled to undergo surgery.

However, the Delhi court rejected his plea, stating that the grounds for bail were 'unreasonable'.

The court noted that Khalid had been granted interim bail in previous occasions, but each application had different reasons and could not be granted every time.

The court also remarked that Khalid's mother's surgery was a simple procedure and did not require his presence, as his five sisters and father were present to take care of her.

This is not the first time Khalid has sought bail in the case. He was last granted bail in December 2025 to attend his sister's wedding.

Khalid, along with activist Sharjeel Imam, is among the 20 people booked under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) for allegedly orchestrating the 2020 Delhi riots.

The Supreme Court had earlier denied bail to Khalid and Imam, stating that Umar played a 'central and formative' role in the alleged conspiracy.

However, a recent bench of justices BV Nagarathna and Ujjal Bhuyan criticized the January judgment, stating that bail is the rule and jail an exception under UAPA.
