The United States sank an Iranian ship, 'IRIS Dena', in international waters off the coast of Sri Lanka, killing at least 87 sailors and rescuing 32 survivors.

The Iranian frigate was torpedoed by a US submarine on March 4, after it left India following a multilateral naval exercise.

The US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth confirmed the target, stating that the Iranian warship thought it was safe in international waters, but was instead sunk by a quiet death.

The IRIS Dena was one of the newest warships of Iran, a Moudge-class frigate armed with heavy guns, missiles, and torpedoes.

The US and Israel launched a joint attack on Iran, which led to the death of its supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and escalated tensions in the region.
