Former Uttarakhand chief minister Major General (retd) Bhuwan Chandra Khanduri was cremated with full state honours at the Kharkhari crematorium in Haridwar.
Khanduri, known for his military discipline, personal integrity and simplicity, passed away in Dehradun at the age of 91.
Senior political leaders, security personnel and a large number of people attended the funeral, which was attended by a guard of honour presented by the Army and police personnel.
Khanduri's son, Manish Khanduri, lit the funeral pyre, while his daughter, Uttarakhand assembly speaker Ritu Khanduri Bhushan, remembered her father as a leader who combined military discipline with public service.
Chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami described Khanduri's passing as an irreparable loss for both the state and the country, while Union power minister Manohar Lal Khattar praised his simplicity, discipline and honesty.
The state government declared a public holiday on Wednesday and announced three-day state mourning from May 19 to May 21, during which the national flag will fly at half-mast at all government offices.
