Veteran CPI(M) leader and former minister G Sudhakaran announced that he will contest the forthcoming Kerala assembly election as an Independent from the Ambalappuzha constituency.

Sudhakaran, a four-time MLA and two-time minister, claimed that he has not renewed his membership in the CPI(M) due to feeling 'insulted and neglected' by the district and state leadership of the party.

He cited instances of being targeted and vilified by party leaders, who he claims were subordinate to him, and expressed his desire to fight against 'political criminals and corruption'.

CPI(M) district secretary R Nasar denied the allegations, stating that Sudhakaran was treated with respect and was invited to district committee meetings.

Congress leader VD Satheesan expressed his party's willingness to deliberate on extending support to Sudhakaran, calling his exit a signal of the eroding base of the Communist party in Kerala.
