In a bid to promote unity and harmony, Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay attended a Christmas celebration in Mamallapuram, just two days after the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) held a grand Christmas bash in Tirunelveli district. Addressing the gathering, Vijay, a Christian by birth, emphasized the importance of respecting all religions and promised to safeguard religious harmony in the state. Vijay's party, TVK, has positioned itself as a champion of secular values, with policies focused on social justice. He reiterated this commitment, stating that social and religious harmony would be protected at all costs. In a subtle dig at the DMK, Vijay referenced the Old Testament parable of Joseph, who rose to power despite being betrayed by his brothers. The event came as tensions simmer between TVK and the DMK, with Vijay accusing the ruling party of conspiring in the stampede that occurred during a TVK rally in Karur, which claimed 41 lives. While the DMK maintains that the stampede was caused by TVK's failure to follow crowd management rules, analysts suggest that the party's Christmas event may have been an attempt to shore up its Christian vote bank, which constitutes over 6% of Tamil Nadu's population. As the minority vote bank in Tamil Nadu remains a key factor in state politics, Vijay's message of unity and harmony is likely to be closely watched. With TVK positioning itself as a rival to the DMK and the BJP, the battle for Tamil Nadu's voters is set to intensify in the coming months.
